#1 Ranked Distillery of 112 Globally

A Once-in-a-Generation Opportunity

Karuizawa whisky is the most coveted spirit on earth — ranked #1 out of 112 distilleries globally. After the original distillery closed in 2011, it was reborn in 2022 under the late Osami Uchibori, Master Distiller, producing only 250 casks per year of sherry cask whisky, with none bottled before 10 years of age. In March 2026, two original Karuizawa casks sold at Christie's London for a combined £4.25 million. Stewart & Robertson is offering Australian investors fractional access to a 2023 new-make cask at the earliest — and most profitable — point in the maturation journey.

A Legend — Closed, Reborn, and Rarer Than Ever

Built in 1956 at the foothill of Mount Asama, Karuizawa produced a rich, powerful single malt using Golden Promise barley imported from Scotland — the same barley that gave its spirit a character closely likened to the finest sherried Scotch.

Despite growing international acclaim for Japanese whisky, Kirin Holdings mothballed Karuizawa in 2000 and shut it down permanently in 2011. All remaining stock and equipment was sold to private investors — making what little exists today irreplaceable. No new Karuizawa spirit from the original distillery will ever exist.

Then came the rebirth. A major revitalisation returned Karuizawa to production from late 2022, led by the late Osami Uchibori, Master Distiller, and key members of the founding team. Only 250 casks are produced per year — solely sherry cask whisky — and none bottled before 10 years of age. This is the cask S&R is offering.

Why Japanese Whisky, Why Now

Karuizawa is ranked the #1 distillery in the world out of 112 ranked distilleries (Whiskystats.com). Japanese whisky is outperforming every other spirits category in growth, yet has fewer than 15 operational distilleries in the entire country.

"To own a cask is to take part in the final chapter of Karuizawa's story. Once sold, it is extremely unlikely that any further Karuizawa casks will come to market."

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly am I buying? +
You are purchasing fractional ownership in a 2023 Karuizawa new-make cask, currently stored at the Karuizawa distillery in Komoro, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. One unit is equivalent to 10 bottles of whisky liquid. You receive formal ownership documentation including a Delivery Order signed by the warehouse operator confirming the transfer of your portion to your name.
How does the exit work? +
When the cask reaches ten years of age in October 2033, Stewart & Robertson bottles the liquid on your behalf and sells the bottles to the secondary market — including hotel and bar pre-orders, auction houses (Christie's, Bonhams, Sotheby's), online collectors markets, and private buyers. You receive your proceeds from the sale, minus a 10% commission on profit only. If there is no profit above your purchase price, no commission is charged.
Is the 400% ROI projection guaranteed? +
No. The 400% projected return is an estimate based on current secondary market prices for Karuizawa bottles and the historical appreciation trajectory of Japanese whisky. Whisky cask investment is an unregulated alternative asset. Values can go down as well as up, and past performance of comparable casks is not a guarantee of future results. We recommend speaking with your financial adviser before committing.
Where is the cask physically stored? +
The cask is stored at the Karuizawa distillery in the city of Komoro in the Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Storage and insurance costs are fully paid on your behalf until December 31, 2033. Investors may visit the distillery and their cask in person upon request.
Can I invest through my SMSF? +
Whisky cask investment may be eligible as a collectable or personal use asset within an SMSF, subject to the fund's documented investment strategy and compliance with ATO requirements. We strongly recommend consulting your SMSF adviser or accountant before proceeding. Stewart & Robertson can provide documentation to support your trustee review.
What documentation do I receive? +
Upon completing your investment, you receive: (1) a personalised purchase contract; (2) a Delivery Order confirming cask ownership in your name; (3) Stewart & Robertson's Certificate of Good Standing (Singapore ACRA). All certifications are provided digitally and are verifiable independently.
Is this investment regulated in Australia? +
Whisky cask investment is an unregulated alternative asset class in Australia. It is not a managed investment scheme, nor is it covered by Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL) protections. This means you will not have access to the same regulatory protections as you would with a regulated financial product. We strongly recommend seeking independent financial advice before investing.
